What 'Ritual Cacao' means
When you buy Ritual Cacao, you're usually looking for cacao in its original form: pure cacao mass, without sugar, without milk powder and without flavourings. It's also called ceremonial cacao. It's drunk in cups or plant-based milk and is refined with spices, often mindfully and at ease, alone or in a group. The term is not protected. That's why it's worth taking a closer look at origin, variety and ingredient list.
In my shop you'll find exclusively pure cacao mass from Ecuador and Peru. You can read more about me and my work under The person behind it.
Ritual cacao variety recommendations
Each variety tastes different. This is often the most important reason to choose one or the other:
- Sierra Ecuador: soft and mild, very fine, with pleasant bitterness. Gently earthy, round and balanced. A good choice for getting started.
- Criollo Peru: considered the noblest and rarest cacao variety in the world. Soft, elegant and multi-layered.
- Block: You cut or shave off the amount you need yourself. This works well if you see the preparation as part of the ritual.
- Drops: The Criollo from Peru is available as drops. They're easy to measure and melt quickly.
- Wafers: The Naranjal from Ecuador comes in flat wafers.
- Cacao is a stimulating beverage and not a medicine. I make no claims about its effects.
- If you're sensitive to stimulants, are pregnant or take medication, please ask your doctor first.
- I ship to Austria and Germany. Current conditions are in the terms and conditions.
All varieties cost 60,00 € per kilogram. So you decide based on taste, not price.
Block, drops or wafers: which form suits you?
The cacao mass comes in different forms. The content is the same; the difference is in how you use it:

Preparation and accessories
The cacao mass is dissolved in hot, not boiling, water or in a plant-based milk. Many people then whisk it until frothy. For this, the Molinillo is ideal – a traditional wooden cacao whisk that has been used in South America since the 15th century. For serving in a group, the wooden ceremony ladle is a great choice.
If you like to refine your cacao, there are cacao blends available as 50-g powder, for example Lucuma, Maca or Guarana. For everything else, you'll find more things that many cacao lovers and ceremony leaders appreciate in the ceremony accessories and in the smudging supplies.
