What do people mean by Zauberkakao?
The term Zauberkakao is not a fixed product designation. Most people use it for cacao that you drink consciously and calmly, often as a small ritual. It usually means pure cacao mass: ground cacao beans, without sugar and without additives. If you're looking for a supplier with exactly that name: we are Zeremonie Kakao, a small online shop by Jochen Petz. With us you'll find pure ceremonial cacao mass from Ecuador and Peru.
How to recognise good ceremony cacao
With cacao for ceremonies, simplicity is what matters most. The ingredients list ideally contains just one thing: cacao. The flavour comes from the variety and origin, not from sugar, flavourings or powders.
- Pure cacao mass: no additives, the flavour is strong and pleasantly bitter.
- Clear origin: with us, Ecuador and Peru.
- Practical form: as a block, as drops or as wafers – however you like to measure it.
Our varieties at a glance
Each variety tastes a little different. All cost 60,00 € per kilogramme.
- Sierra Ecuador Block: soft and mild, with pleasant bitterness, gently earthy and balanced. A good starting point.
- Criollo Peru Block: Criollo is considered a particularly rare cacao variety. We describe it as soft, elegant and complex.
- Criollo Peru Drops: the same fine Criollo as drops. They're easy to measure and melt quickly.
You'll find all varieties in the category Ceremonial Cacao.
How to prepare your Zauberkakao
You don't need much. As a guideline, many people use about 25 to 40 grammes of cacao mass per cup. Feel free to find the amount that suits you.
- Chop the cacao finely, or use drops or wafers, which are already small.
- Heat water (or a plant-based milk) until just before it boils. It shouldn't bubble.
- Put the cacao in your cup or pot and pour the hot liquid over it.
- Stir or froth everything well until there are no lumps left.
- Add spices as you like. You'll find which spices you can use under Further information
- Sweetening is not a must. If you like, add a little honey or maple syrup.
The traditional wooden Molinillo is great for frothing. The wooden cacao ceremony spoon works perfectly for scooping and serving.
Blends and accessories for your ritual
If you like to vary your cacao, we have cacao blends available as 50-g powders – for example Lucuma, Maca, Siberian Ginseng, Ashwagandha or Guarana. They each cost 10,00 € per pack. For the right setting, there's ceremony accessories and smudging products like White Sage or Palo Santo. You'll find more background information and ideas under Further information.
